Activity summary:

The UN General Assembly agreed in December 1993 to establish a High Commissioner for Human Rights charged with protecting human rights around the world. The High Commissioner is the principal UN official charged with promoting and protecting the effective enjoyment by all civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. Through the Centre for Human Rights, the commissioner oversees advisory services and technical and financial assistance to states and regional organisations, and coordinates human rights activities throughout the UN system.
